Shuttles will soon be driving autonomously in Hamburg

Autonomously driving minibuses already existed in Hamburg with the HEAT project, in which a public bus drove autonomously through the HafenCity. In addition, the Moia shared taxis should later work without a driver. Now another provider of autonomous driving is coming to the city. Hochbahn announced on Wednesday that it would enter into a partnership with the Holon company.

Holon is a spin-off of the traditional Paderborn-based automotive supplier Benteler and is considered a specialist in electric, autonomous shuttle vehicles. In January 2023, the company's first very own mover will be presented at the CES trade fair in Las Vegas. The minibus could then be driving on the streets of Hamburg from 2024.

According to Hochbahn, the core of the new partnership is to create solutions for autonomous on-demand systems in public transport. "Autonomous on-demand services will help shape the mobility of the future," explained Henrik Falk, CEO of Hochbahn. With the cooperation they want to "take a decisive step towards the use of such vehicles in local public transport".

Marco Kollmeier, Managing Director of Holon, explained: “Our common goal is to make urban mobility more sustainable, safer and more inclusive through the use of autonomous movers. Affordable and robust shuttles will therefore play an essential role in the public transport of the future.” With Hochbahn, they have a committed partner “to test and actively shape this future in Hamburg city transport.”

The cooperation will start in the coming year and, according to Falk, should make a contribution to achieving the "Hamburg tact". By 2030. The goal of the Hanseatic city is for everyone in Hamburg to find a public mobility service within five minutes. That, as Hochbahn boss Falk emphasizes regularly, cannot be achieved with classic public transport consisting of buses and trains. On-demand offers, ideally autonomous ones, would have to make a significant contribution.

Holon's vehicles will initially drive in a pilot area. Exactly where this could be and how many Holon vehicles will be driving in Hamburg will be determined in more detail in 2023. According to the Hochbahn, details have not yet been finalized in the Momorandum of Understanding that has now been signed.
