Scholz must finally act according to the principles of the "Zeitenwende" speech

Ukraine had asked for tanks, air defenses and artillery. Germany sends minesweepers, power generators and tents. That is the result of the most recent summit in Ramstein, at which US-led discussions were held on new weapons aid for Ukraine.

The pattern has been the same for seven months: Germany has turned a deaf ear to Ukraine's pleas. The politicians of a country at war have to sit back and forth in Berlin and Washington for weeks so that Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) moves minimally. And Scholz always sends the signal to Ukraine: We decide for ourselves when to deliver weapons and which ones exactly.

“In Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa and Mariupol, people are not only defending their homeland. They fight for freedom and their democracy, for values that we share with them. ... We stand by their side, on the right side of history," said Scholz in his "Zeitenwende" speech. Those were strong and right words.

German and Ukrainian interests are congruent. If Germans and Ukrainians want to live in peace, freedom and prosperity in the long term, Ukraine must win this war. But the Chancellor does not treat Kyiv as a friend, but as a supplicant. Why he does this remains a mystery.

Does he want to prevent a third world war? That would be inconclusive. Other NATO countries are supplying weapons on a much larger scale – German reluctance doesn't change that. Is Scholz hoping for good relations with Vladimir Putin if Russia wins the war? That too would be an illusion.

Germany took sides in this war, that counts for Moscow, the federal government will not appease the Kremlin with rebelliousness when it comes to arms deliveries. Does Scholz want to court the pacifist and/or pro-Russian part of the SPD and the population? Possibly. But this strategy does not work either. Because Scholz offends both sides with his middle course of arms deliveries against his will.

The Chancellor must finally act according to the principles of the "turning point" speech when it comes to arms deliveries - or justify why he is not doing so.
