Scandal about early exit from coal in the east

After the cancellation of the Leag group works council, the chairman of the IGBCE union, Michael Vassiliadis, took part digitally in the retreat of the Greens parliamentary group in Weimar. That said a group spokeswoman for the German Press Agency. Vassiliadis should be added to the climate protection session on Tuesday afternoon.

In the dispute over an early exit from coal in the east, the group works council of the energy company Leag canceled its participation in the closed meeting of the Greens parliamentary group on Monday. This emerged from a published open letter to the parliamentary group. The reason for this was that the Greens also want to bring the coal phase-out forward by eight years to 2030 in the East.

The letter states that the Greens had invited the group works council to discuss "structural change", under which it should report on how it could succeed. "To get to the point: Certainly not by setting an arbitrary new exit date. However, this is exactly the obvious purpose of this retreat.”

The exam in Weimar begins on Tuesday. Leag operates lignite mining in Lusatia and power plants in the region.

The mining union IGBCE sees an early phase-out of coal in 2030 as feasible only under certain conditions. She had repeatedly stated that the expansion of renewable energies, the construction of new gas-fired power plants and lines had to be pushed ahead, and that security of supply had to be guaranteed. In addition, she specified as a condition that massive investments be made in the structural change in the coalfields and that new jobs be created.
