Rügenwalder finances artificial meat project

The Lower Saxony sausage manufacturer Rügenwalder is involved in the financing of a German-Dutch project for meat from the bioreactor. The company is giving a "six-digit amount" to the Respect Farms Foundation, said Rügenwalder research director Patrick Bühr WELT AM SONNTAG.

"We're signaling that industry has a strong interest in the technology -- because it solves problems," he said. Rügenwalder is convinced that the meat industry needs "an overhaul".

The Respect Farms Foundation wants to develop a concept to equip conventional farms with bioreactors in which meat grows from cells. As a first step, a feasibility study should be carried out. If this is positive, the foundation wants to set up a test farm. The aim is to convert existing agriculture to the new technology.
