"RKI embarrassment in intensive care bed forecast"

27,587 corona cases were reported to the RKI yesterday, 18 percent fewer than a week earlier.

The nationwide 7-day incidence continues to fall, from 199 to 194.

It falls in 14 of the 16 federal states.

The two exceptions are Hamburg, which reports a minimal increase - and Saxony, where after a reporting breakdown the day before, late reports were apparently due.

The number of corona cases in intensive care units fell to 953 - and thus to below 1000 for the first time since October 2nd.

Occupancy is 20 percent below the previous week and even 72 percent lower than a year ago.

However, the relevant RKI model did not see this development coming.

The "20-day prognosis", which is always published on Thursdays with the RKI weekly report, saw a steep increase in the number of Covid 19 patients treated in intensive care four weeks ago. In fact, the numbers should start declining soon after the release.

Two weeks ago, the RKI model predicted an approximately stagnant intensive care bed occupancy, a decrease to less than 1000 within 14 days was even outside the so-called 95% forecast interval for the modelers.

In the new RKI weekly report that has now been published, the modelers’ forecast indicates a slight increase in the number of corona occupancies in intensive care units (see screenshot).

Of course, it cannot be ruled out that the RKI is right this time for a change.

But that's not particularly likely.

Because the number of new admissions has recently fallen significantly, and an end to the downward trend is not in sight.

Every day we hear the new Corona case numbers. But what do they mean, where are we in the pandemic and what is the trend? Olaf Gersemann explains and evaluates the current figures briefly and concisely - every morning anew.
