Republicans nominate Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House

After the midterm elections, the US Republicans nominated their faction leader Kevin McCarthy as the future speaker of the House of Representatives. According to US media, the 57-year-old received 188 votes in a vote by the conservative faction in the Congress Chamber on Tuesday. His opponent Andy Biggs from the right wing of the party received 31 votes.

McCarthy took an important step in replacing Democrat Nancy Pelosi at the helm of the House of Representatives after last Tuesday's midterms. However, the decisive vote in the entire Chamber will not take place until January 3, when the new Congress meets.

The vote in the Republican faction took place on Tuesday before the future majority in the House of Representatives was even certain. The Republicans are likely to take control of the chamber with its total of 435 deputies; because many tight races were still open recently, the major US broadcasters have not yet declared a winner. At least 218 seats are required for a majority in the House of Representatives.

McCarthy has the support of former US President Donald Trump, who was expected to announce a new presidential bid on Tuesday evening. In the right wing of the party, which is loyal to Trump, the MP from the state of California still has some opponents. They accuse the previous minority leader in the House of Representatives of not standing behind Trump clearly enough. They also want to pin McCarthy on a radical confrontation course with President Joe Biden's administration.

Because the Republicans are only likely to get a very narrow majority in the House of Representatives, the far right wing of the Republicans could block McCarthy's election as the so-called "Speaker of the House". He therefore has great power to demand concessions from McCarthy. In the midterms, the Republicans had performed significantly weaker than expected. In addition to the surprisingly close race for the House of Representatives, they were unable to wrest the Senate majority from the Democrats as they had hoped.
