Pope Francis is being treated in hospital for bronchitis

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis is on the mend after being admitted to a hospital. The 86-year-old suffers from bronchitis, the Vatican announced on Thursday. After receiving antibiotics intravenously, he is doing much better. "Based on the expected course, the Holy Father could be released in the next few days," explained the doctors at the Gemelli Clinic.

The Vatican had previously announced that Francis had breakfast, read the newspaper and worked from his hospital room in Rome. He went to a chapel "where he came to pray and received the Eucharist," it said.

The Pope has been in the hospital since Wednesday. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope would need treatment for several days after he recently had trouble breathing. Tests at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome would have revealed the infection. It is not a Covid 19 disease.

The Vatican initially announced that the stay in the hospital, which began in the afternoon, had been planned. The Pope's audiences for Thursday and Friday were canceled. At first it was unclear whether he would leave the hospital in time for Palm Sunday.

The Pope spent ten days in the hospital in July 2021 because he underwent intestinal surgery. A short time later, the 86-year-old announced that he had fully recovered from the operation and was able to eat normally again. In an interview with the AP news agency in January, the pope said he had problems with his intestines again.

As a young man, the Pope had part of his lungs removed due to a respiratory infection. He has apparently survived the coronavirus pandemic so far without a positive test result.

The Pope has been using a wheelchair for more than a year because of knee problems. Recently he has used a walking stick more often. The Pope has said he does not want to have knee surgery because he did not respond well to general anesthesia during the colon surgery. His hospitalization comes shortly before the beginning of Holy Week, that is, the week before Easter.
