The Montevives Secondary School has launched a campaign to stop schoolchildren from becoming addicted to drugs. It is being led by the Citizen Security and Youth departments of the City Council of Las Gabias. This campaign was created by both departments to stop drug abuse and end the program at an early stage in schools.
The Consistory highlighted that the initiative was designed to give young people all the information they can about drugs and the devastating effects it can have on their lives. The educational center has started to host talks and workshops by the Cabildo, which are divided into two parts.
This workshop focuses on the theoretical aspect of the topic. It covers basic concepts like what a drug is and how it is used, dependence, tolerance, and the psychological and physiological effects of its use. Also, it discusses the social issues that can be derived from these substances. These talks will discuss what to do in an emergency and how to say "no" when someone offers their consumption. They also highlight the legal aspects of drug possession.
Juan Antonio Franco, Councilor for Citizen Security has stated that the second section is the most practical. The Canine Unit of Las Gabias' Local Police will help with an exhibition of how dogs find the drug. This activity will be held in other schools of the municipality this spring. Victor Puentedura (Councilor for Youth) stated that the objective was to reach as many children and young people as possible in the municipality.
