Ongoing violence in the West Bank - Palestinian teenager killed

According to Palestinian sources, a youth has been shot dead by the Israeli military in the north of the West Bank. The 15-year-old was hit by a bullet in the back on Thursday and later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said. In the incident in the village of Asun near the town of Kalkilya, another teenager was shot in the chest. Palestinian media reported that the two youths were hit while throwing stones at Israeli soldiers entering the village.

Israel's military said the youths hurled firecrackers at Israeli vehicles traveling on a nearby road. When the soldiers arrived, they threw incendiary bombs on them. The soldiers then reportedly opened fire.

The situation between Israel and the Palestinians is extremely tense at the moment, and violence breaks out again and again. Since a series of deadly attacks on Israelis in the spring of last year, the army has further increased its presence in the West Bank. After a Palestinian attack in which two Israelis were killed, Israeli settlers rioted there on Sunday evening. One Palestinian was killed and hundreds injured. Dozens of houses, shops and cars were set on fire.

Fourteen Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks since the beginning of the year, according to the AP news agency. In the same period, 63 Palestinians lost their lives - they were killed, for example, in confrontations with the Israeli army or in their own attacks.

Israel conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967. More than 600,000 Israeli settlers live there today. The Palestinians claim the territories for an independent state of Palestine with the Arab-influenced eastern part of Jerusalem as the capital.
