One graffiti in the CEIP Al Zawiya honors twelve exceptional women from La Zubia

Publicia Laetinia, a Roman woman. Arab women such as Nazhun or Onmalfata are examples of this. Isabel La Catolica and Isabel II were the queens. The Marchioness Dona Mencia de Mendoza. Or Carmen Jimenez, the sculptor. These are twelve women who have been a part of La Zubia's history, prehistory and present. The City Council dedicated a mural measuring more than 50m to them, which was inaugurated on March 8, International Women's Day.

As part of an educational initiative by the Department of Youth, schoolchildren from the CEIP Al Zawiya created graffiti in the schoolyard with Alc13, a local artist. Aleixandra, a student at the Municipal School of Comics was responsible for creating a didactic booklet that included drawings and could be used as a tool to teach schools about La Zubia's history.

"With this project, we have transferred those drawings on paper to this wall of Al Zawiya School, to facilitate learning through urban art," said Antonio Arquelladas (Councilor for Youth of La Zubia), during the inauguration of the new graffiti devoted to women.

This mural was created by sixth and fifth graders. They worked with Alc13, an urban artist, for months. Why is it graffiti? The Department of Youth believes that urban art can be a powerful tool for learning and social transformation. The councillor explains that this action also helps to change some of the negative attitudes of the general population towards graffiti.

Mayor of Youth points out the Al Zawiya School has worked with the City Council to address the issues of equality and graffiti via the booklet or educational itineraries of La Zubia. Arquelladas says, "They asked for a new method to bring history closer to their students. This alternative, the mural, was chosen by the educational centre, the AMPA, and the Department of Youth."

Puri Lopez, La Zubia's mayor, attended the inauguration. He highlighted the "immensive artistic quality" of the graffiti. This is part of an educational project that will see the story of twelve women from Al Zawiya College forever.
