One dead in fire at refugee camp

A man died in a fire in a residential accommodation for refugees and homeless people in Hamburg on Monday evening. This was reported by the fire department and police. The fire brigade was therefore deployed with a large contingent to extinguish the fire in a complex of residential buildings stacked on top of each other in the Winterhude district. Ten containers burned out. The cause of the fire was initially unclear, according to the police.

The fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. Passers-by alerted the rescue workers after seeing flames in house 18 of the residential accommodation on Tessenowweg. When the fire brigade and police arrived, the upper floor of the accommodation of the operator Fördern und Wohnen, which offers space for around 500 people, was already fully engulfed in flames. About 75 firefighters were on duty for around five hours. Because of the heavy smoke development, residents were asked via warning apps to close windows and doors.

One person was already missing in the burning area at the time. Several firefighting teams then tried to penetrate the affected container floor, but were hampered by the "extremely high fire intensity" according to the fire brigade. The reason for this was that insulating foam caught fire in the outer walls of the container. A 38-year-old resident had tried to help himself before the emergency services arrived and suffered from exhaust gas poisoning and a hand injury - he was treated on an outpatient basis in a hospital.

The missing man was later found dead in the burned-out area. His identity was initially unclear. It is not yet known who is involved, said a police spokesman on Tuesday. The cause of the fire was also still unclear, and investigations were ongoing.

The extent of the property damage could not be quantified for the time being. According to the fire brigade, the fire on the upper floor affected an area of about 15 by 25 meters. House 18 is no longer habitable for the time being and was confiscated by the police for further investigations, particularly with regard to the cause of the fire. According to the police, a crisis team from the operator organized emergency accommodation for ten affected residents. The State Criminal Police Office took over the investigation.
