Nine million euros in energy grants for Hamburg club sports

Hamburg's sports clubs, with their more than 500,000 members, can expect additional municipal aid of nine million euros in view of the massive increase in electricity and gas prices. Corresponding applications can probably be made to the Hamburger Sportbund (HSB) from December 6 retrospectively to October 1, as Sports Senator Andy Grote (SPD) said on Tuesday. According to the information, the amount of the subsidy that does not have to be repaid depends on the type of system, the type of energy and the price increase. The money came from the city's 125 million euro emergency fund.

Specifically, up to 14,500 euros could be paid out for a tennis hall with a 200 percent increase in electricity prices, for a sports hall with a gas price increase of more than 100 percent, it would be 6,800 euros. According to the information, a price increase of at least 25 percent compared to the previous year must be proven in order to be able to submit applications. The aid will be paid in addition to federal aid.

Numerous requests for help have already reached the HSB, said Board Member Daniel Knoblich. Almost 40 percent or 330 of the member organizations in the sports federation have their own facilities, of which 873 require electricity and 714 gas. The requirement is up to 16.5 million or around 50 million kilowatt hours.

Finance Senator Andreas Dressel (SPD) said that reduced income or financial contributions from the city to the federal relief packages would add up to a total of 3.6 billion euros by 2027. This would only be offset by relief from the federal government in the amount of around 360 million. "That's a pretty serious imbalance."

Dressel emphasized that the Hanseatic city could cope with this due to its financial strength and even set up its own emergency fund. However, there would be less scope for other things. He is concerned about poorer federal states such as Saarland or Bremen. "It's very difficult for other countries to deal with."

The left-wing faction in the Hamburg Parliament welcomed the aid package. “However, nine million euros are far from enough.” Especially for smaller clubs, this aid package is just a drop in the bucket. More needs to be done. With a view to the nine million aid package, the AfD spoke of a good start “if the clubs are satisfied with it”. FDP State Vice Katarina Blume said: "It is important that the aid is approved quickly and paid out unbureaucratically."
