Neymar has decided who should govern in his home country: the star striker from Paris Saint-Germain has been promoting Jair Bolsonaro for weeks. Most recently, Neymar posted a photo of the Brazilian flag on his Instagram profile, including "Bolsonaro 22" in yellow capital letters. Under the election advertising, other professionals such as Lucas Moura also expressed their support.
Neymar even wants to dedicate his first goal at the World Cup in Qatar to the Brazilian president if he wins the election. "The cup is not far away. That would be really wonderful: Bolsonaro re-elected, Brazil champion and everyone happy," Neymar said during a joint online broadcast with the far-right leader on Saturday.
The 30-year-old Paris professional had already supported Bolsonaro before the first round of the presidential election on October 2nd. A runoff election is scheduled for October 30 between Bolsonaro and his archrival, left-leaning ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Recent polls put Bolsonaro around six percentage points behind Lula. In the first ballot, Lula got 48 percent of the votes, Bolsonaro got 43 percent. Polls had predicted a significantly larger lead for Lula and even made a victory in the first ballot seem possible.
Bolsonaro represents similar values to himself and his family, Neymar justified his support for the right-wing politician on Saturday. In addition, he publicly supported him “in the most difficult time” of his life. Neymar did not provide any further information.
However, he was accused of rape by a model in 2019. At the time, Bolsonaro was convinced of his innocence. The investigation against Neymar was later dropped due to lack of evidence.
While Neymar pushed for Bolsonaro, his club easily defended their lead in Ligue 1. PSG won their away game at AC Ajaccio 3-0 (0-0). The goals were scored by Kylian Mbappé (24th and 82nd minutes) and Lionel Messi (78th). Paris are now six points clear of FC Lorient. Neymar was yellow-banned for the French champions.
