Nasa postpones the start of the Artemis 1 moon mission again

In view of an approaching tropical storm, Nasa is again postponing the launch of its new moon rocket into space. The start of the unmanned moon mission Artemis 1, which was last planned for November 14, should now take place on November 16 in Cape Canaveral in the US state of Florida, said Nasa manager Jim Free on Twitter on Tuesday. According to NASA, a two-hour time window from 1:04 a.m. (local time, 7:04 a.m. CET) is provided for this. November 19 was set as the replacement date.

With the postponement of the start date, the employees should be able to take care of their families and homes in view of the expected storm "Nicole", explained Nasa manager Free. The National Hurricane Center expects Nicole to develop into a hurricane and hit Florida by Thursday. A warning was issued near the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.

It is the third postponement of the highly anticipated mission in just a few months. 50 years after the last moon landing, NASA wants to use the Artemis 1 mission to prepare people to travel to the moon again. During the unmanned mission, the new giant rocket SLS and the Orion capsule sitting at its tip are to be tested under real conditions.

The follow-up mission Artemis 2 is to bring astronauts into a lunar orbit. With Artemis 3, another moon landing should not be successful before 2025 at the earliest. The start had been canceled in the past, among other things, because of a leaking tank hose.

In addition, one engine could not be cooled down to the required temperature. Problems had also arisen with earlier tests, so that the original schedule had been delayed. In the long term, the Artemis flights should also serve to prepare for manned missions to Mars.
