If you want to get an idea of the top artists in Germany, you should concentrate on NRW. Even if many artists live in Berlin, the Rhineland in particular remains an attractive place to live for painters, sculptors and photographers. The large number of art associations, museums and art galleries, which also give a young scene the opportunity to present their works, is particularly attractive. In addition, the training opportunities at the academies are good. Admittedly, these characteristics are often overlooked - also in NRW itself, as the handling of Charles Wilp's estate shows.
But once a year, NRW is the focus of the art world. When Linde Rohr-Bongard from Cologne publishes the art compass with the ranking of the top 100 in the magazine "Capital". This week it was time again. The headline read: Tony Cragg is the rising star of the year. The Wuppertal sculptor went up the scale by 7,300 points. He now ranks sixth on the list. Gerhard Richter from Cologne has been the undisputed leader for 19 years. In this ranking, which is determined according to sales revenue and participation in exhibitions, artists from Germany occupy half of the first ten places, most of them from North Rhine-Westphalia: in addition to Cragg and Richter, Rosemarie Trockel and Imi Knoebel.
Many prizes have also recently gone to NRW. Katharina Fritsch from Düsseldorf was honored with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. This week it was announced that the Ernst-Franz-Vogelmann-Foundation in Heilbronn will award its 30,000 euro prize for sculpture to Gregor Schneider from Rheydter. And that Thomas Schütte will have an exhibition at MoMA New York in 2024 – that too is a great honor.
