Male suspect wanted after shooting at rabbi's house

After at least four shots were fired at the door of the rabbi's house at the Essen synagogue, the police are looking for a male suspect. That's what North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) said on Friday in Essen to the German Press Agency.

"The attack on the old synagogue in Essen shakes me deeply," said Reul. “The existing video recordings are now being evaluated at full speed. State security is involved.” The Jewish community in Essen “can rest assured that we will do everything we can to identify the perpetrator as quickly as possible,” said Reul.

Bullet holes were found in the rabbi's house at the old synagogue in Essen. There is no danger, nobody was injured, said a police spokeswoman on Friday. However, an explosives detection dog was in use and an investigative commission had been set up.

Witnesses reported the bullet holes. According to the police spokeswoman, it was initially unclear when the shooting took place and how many shots were fired.
