Long prison sentences for two smugglers

In connection with the smuggling of around two tons of cocaine and other drugs from South America to Hamburg, the district court of the Hanseatic city on Wednesday sentenced two men to eight years and ten months and four years and ten months in prison. The 36-year-old main defendant was found guilty of gang illicit drug trafficking. The 35-year-old co-defendant was convicted of aiding and abetting drug trafficking. The court also ordered the confiscation of almost 570,000 euros in drug profits, most of it in the case of the younger suspect.

According to the court, the main defendant was a member of a drug gang. He was therefore involved with separately prosecuted members in various constellations since spring 2019 in the import of cocaine and trafficking in the drug.

The cocaine was smuggled into the port of Hamburg in shipping containers and, after the handling process had been manipulated, was taken out of the port by an in-the-know truck driver and recovered at another location. The main defendant organized and supervised the salvage of the cocaine as the "right hand man" of another gang member.

Together with other accomplices, he organized the salvage of the cocaine from several refrigerated containers with food. However, some of the drugs had already been confiscated in the Netherlands. However, the group managed to get more than 500 kilograms of drugs in this way. The co-defendant, who sold it on, got a kilogram of it.

The recovery of 1,280 kilograms of cocaine failed in June 2020 because customs control of the container loaded with rice had not yet been completed. The drug packages were discovered during the check in July 2020. The co-accused therefore recruited a truck driver who tried twice in vain to pick up the container.

With the decisions, the court remained under the demand of the public prosecutor. She had demanded nine and a half years in prison for the main accused of illicit drug trafficking and five years in prison for the co-defendant for aiding and abetting. The defense pleaded in the case of the main defendant to eight years and ten months in prison, in the case of the co-defendant to four and a half years.

Criminals smuggle cocaine from the South American growing countries to Europe on a large scale in shipping containers, and the security authorities in Germany have intercepted deliveries in the ton range on several occasions. At the Hamburg district court alone, several major proceedings are already dealing with the complex in connection with those sentenced on Wednesday. Only on Monday was a 47-year-old sentenced to twelve years and four months in prison for his involvement in the sale of a ton and a half of cocaine and a ton of marijuana.

In September, the regional court had already sentenced seven men to prison terms, some of them long, for their involvement in the smuggling. The court sentenced the men, aged between 28 and 60, to prison terms ranging from three years and nine months to twelve years.
