Knife attack after cement mixer accident – attacker has to go to psychiatry

After a knife attack on a driver of a cement mixer immediately after a serious accident with a cyclist, the Berlin district court ordered the accused to be placed in a psychiatric hospital. The 48-year-old acted out of a pathological delusion, the presiding judge justified on Wednesday in the so-called security procedure. According to a psychiatric report, the man, who was homeless at the time, still poses a high risk due to a serious illness.

At the end of October 2022, the concrete mixer rolled over the 44-year-old cyclist on the Bundesallee in the Wilmersdorf district. She later died in a hospital. Shortly after the accident, the German suspect attacked the then 64-year-old driver with a knife. On the road, he "stabbed him in the left breast at heart level without justification," according to the prosecutor's application for dangerous bodily harm. The driver sustained a stab wound that required stitches.

The accident caused a nationwide stir and discussion. A special vehicle from the fire brigade, which was supposed to help rescue the trapped woman, was stuck in a traffic jam after an action by the climate protest group Last Generation and therefore arrived at the scene of the accident a few minutes later. The public prosecutor's office in Berlin is investigating against two activists, among other things, because of the failure to provide assistance.

The 48-year-old, who was camping on Bundesallee, "assumed delusional that the cyclist could be his daughter," the verdict said. "It was a very dangerous act of violence." The man had been suffering from paranoid schizophrenia for years. The delusional life is still very present with him at the moment.

The man confessed at the beginning of the process two weeks ago and explained: "I wanted to stab him, I thought he did it on purpose." The 48-year-old has been in the so-called forensic prison since the crime. His defense attorney asked for parole. With its decision, the court followed the request of the public prosecutor. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
