Karlsruhe spends almost 100,000 euros on a new image

The Federal Constitutional Court is reinventing itself – and has dug deep into its pockets to do so. The costs for the conception and development of the new image of the highest German court amount to 84,622 euros. This was announced by a court spokesman at the request of WELT. This sum includes "the entire external presentation of the court".

Last Friday, the court issued a press release entitled “Close to the people, modern and independent, the Federal Constitutional Court with a new look”. It states that from the beginning of March the court will use a new, uniform appearance (“corporate design”) for its decisions and its external correspondence. As WELT has now learned, the implementation of this has already progressed. "So far, costs of 9,894.39 euros have been incurred for this," the court said.

The redesigned federal eagle, which will be much more minimalistic than its predecessor, caused a stir on social networks. By the end of the year, the court also wants to revise its website and make it barrier-free. The aim is a “modern, clear and particularly legible typeface”. In addition, the common fonts and the color scheme of the court were changed.

The judges hope to be able to bring their work even closer to the citizens. "The Federal Constitutional Court is a citizens' court and - as is shown by the consistently high number of constitutional complaints from citizens - is also perceived as such by people seeking justice," says the court's website.

Karlsruhe has repeatedly made the headlines in recent years because of its public relations work. Since June 2015, it has published links to its press releases on a Twitter account that now has over 77,000 followers; however, the comment function has been switched off.

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the court launched an Instagram presence on a trial basis for several months before deactivating it again. Since Stephan Harbarth has been President of the Federal Constitutional Court, the costs for external lawyers, who can represent the Federal Constitutional Court against press information lawsuits, for example, have skyrocketed. As an independent constitutional body, the Federal Constitutional Court has its own budget. 40.5 million euros have been set aside there for 2023 – an increase of 12.8 percent compared to the previous year.
