Just putting new mattresses on the pea doesn't help

The fairy tale of the princess and the pea tells of 20 mattresses and 20 down duvets, under which the legume lies and which the princess can still feel. The situation is very similar with the German state and its citizens: since the Corona crisis, the federal government has piled up a huge pile of mattresses with aid and relief packages, but it still pinches.

To avoid any misunderstanding: This is not a plea against state support, but when two-thirds of the people in this country consider the state to be “overwhelmed”, then this raises the question: is it the government or the citizens?

Chancellor Scholz answered questions from citizens in Essen. During the talks with the chancellor, he promised solutions to the energy crisis. A lot has already been done, but "we know that's not enough," says Scholz.

Well, the politicians responsible have raised expectations that cannot be met in the long term. From "Whatever it takes" to the "Bazooka" to "Wuchtig" - the state drama of the omnipotent savior in need may work for a certain time. But the crisis is no longer an exception, but everyday life: it has become our day and night shadow.

That requires a different, focused policy. A policy that also brings hardships with it.

For a long time, however, the government shied away from this path, preferring to remain in omnipotence mode with measures such as an energy flat rate for everyone or the 9-euro ticket. With the gas levy - by no means a solo effort by Robert Habeck, but a project of all three traffic light parties - the government has acknowledged for the first time that the state cannot compensate for everything. However, they did not withstand the expected criticism of the levy and distanced themselves from what they had just thought was right.

This is fatal. What is needed now is a government of bean counters, meticulous in finance and spot on in action. Simply putting mattresses on it doesn't help.
