Judges of El Ejido and Roquetas study strikes to push for the promotion of their courts

Judges of El Ejido's judicial districts, Roquetas de Mar, can't accept it any longer. There has been long-standing talk about raising the magistrates category for its courts, which would increase resources and decrease time. However, the promise has not been fulfilled, as the situation worsens.

This week, judges from both sides were fed up with the situation in Roquetas de Mar. They agreed to protest the issue. Yesterday saw the placing of banners calling for the category of magistrates. If there is no change, they can also strike to press the Government of Spain.

Francisco Martin Huete is the dean judge at Roquetas. He has been in office only three years and is therefore the oldest of the judicial districts. The absence of magistrates causes a huge turnover which delays the processing of cases. Both local judges speak of an "alarming lack of stability" with "constant dismissals, new inaugurations by titular judges", to which are also added "long periods of cover by external substitutes".

This is a serious problem in both judicial areas, particularly in Roquetas de Mar where the head changes each year. This phenomenon is being joined by another, which is the rapid increase in criminal and civil cases that is causing these courts to overflow, leading to talk of "collapse".

To unblock the situation, it is crucial to elevate the category to magistrates. Each court would have one more administrative officer, which would allow them to keep the judges in place for longer periods. Most of the court in the area are currently occupied by recently trained judges, with very little experience. They leave when they have the chance, due to litigiousness and desire to be in the top category of magistrates in each city.

Judges of Roquetas De Mar and El Ejido recalled the complexity of the area. There is increasing population, growing business activity and demographic problems. They also noted the increase in detainees and the collapse of civil registers. This has led to "extreme difficulties" managing the gender-based violence.

Wait for the eighth court

The promotion, as you can see from a document to the which IDEAL had access, was supported by the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia in 2018. However, the Government appears to not be in favor of the move. Sources in Almeria from the Government Subdelegation assured IDEAL that promotion to magistrates would have to wait until Roquetas de Mar, which has eight courts. This is despite the fact that the creation of the seventh court was announced just a few weeks ago.

The Poniente judges guarantee that their parties' situation generates a comparable grievance to others like Sanlucar de Barrameda, San Javier, Motril, El Prat de Llobregat or Sanlucar de Barrameda, who have all been promoted.

Yesterday, large banners were put up at the doors of the courts to claim the category of magistrates. A meeting was requested with the Ministry of Justice in order to discuss the issues that have been affecting the area and to request information about the criteria used to raise the category of magistracy.
