It's getting tighter at Hamburg's primary and preschools

Records are often a reason to celebrate - but with a view to Hamburg's school situation, the champagne corks are not popping in the education authorities at the moment. The challenge posed by the new maximum number of registrations for primary and pre-school is too great. One reason for the increase is the refugee children who are now being accepted into the school system.

Specifically, according to the school authorities on Monday, the situation is as follows: A total of 17,600 pupils had registered for the first classes at Hamburg's state elementary schools by February 10, 741 more than last year. The increase corresponds to around 35 additional school classes. Parents have also registered over 700 more children for the pre-school classes than in the previous school year.

“Actually, we are well prepared for this sharp increase in student numbers. However, due to the additional intake of over 5,000 refugee children and young people last year, the unusual development in the new first classes and the pre-school classes poses problems for us," commented School Senator Ties Rabe (SPD) on the figures. In line with the increasing number of pupils, the aim is to further increase the number of teachers and with the school building program to prepare the schools "well for the growing number of children". The current school development plan plans a total of 44 new schools and a significant expansion of more than 120 existing schools.

"Due to the large number of refugees, we now have to take further measures," Rabe continued. That is why the school authorities recently ordered a flat rate of 50 additional mobile classrooms, which can be set up at the schools until school enrollment after the summer holidays.

The development of the number of registrations for the first classes varies greatly depending on the district: The strongest increases compared to last year were in the districts of Wandsbek (201), Hamburg-Nord (125), Eimsbüttel (120) and Hamburg-Mitte (117 ), followed by Harburg (97), Bergedorf (52) and Altona (29). In the pre-schools, the number of 11,000 registrations was skipped for the first time.
