Interior authority ready to support IZH closure

With regard to a possible closure of the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH), the Hamburg interior authority has signaled its willingness to cooperate. "Hamburg is ready to provide any support," Daniel Schaefer, spokesman for the interior authority, told the Evangelical Press Service (epd) on Thursday. The Federal Ministry of the Interior is responsible for a ban procedure, he said. On Wednesday evening, the Bundestag accepted a motion by the SPD, Greens and FDP parliamentary groups to close the IZH. The federal government should examine whether and how the IZH can be closed.

In view of the fact that the IZH is active nationwide and across Europe, there is agreement with the Federal Ministry of the Interior that a ban procedure under the Associations Act falls within their competence, says Schaefer. "We assume that all legal options will be exhausted there to take action against the IZH," he said.

Schaefer said that the Hamburg interior authorities had "always pointed out the extremist orientation of the IZH" in recent years. She "never left any doubt" about her critical attitude towards the IZH and, after her expulsion of the deputy IZH head, also pushed through his departure.

On November 2, the 46-year-old left the city of Hamburg for Iran. According to the interior authorities, his complaint against the expulsion order also failed in the second instance in mid-October before the Hamburg Higher Administrative Court. It was said that Seyed Soleiman M. supported militant Shiite extremist and terrorist organizations. The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution has information proving that the person concerned maintained connections to two fundraising organizations working for Hezbollah, which have now been banned for terrorist financing. According to the interior authority, the person concerned also maintained close contact with representatives of Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah (German: "Party of God") is responsible for a large number of attacks, openly questions Israel's right to exist and calls for its violent elimination, it said. Since April 2020 there has been a ban on activities in Germany.

The IZH is currently still a member of the Islamic umbrella organization Schura, which in turn is a contractual partner of the city of Hamburg in the so-called Islamic State Treaty. This is due to be extended, and the Hamburg SPD recently made it clear at a state party conference that it would only be possible to continue without the IZH.
