Initiative sets up several igloo tents in Hamburg

The initiative "Help for Hamburg's homeless" is setting up another winter-proof igloo tent for the homeless at the Lawaetzhaus in Altona today, so there will be a total of three igloos near the Elbchaussee.

Five igloos had already been set up in the garden of the Hans Fitze House in Harburg in mid-January. "Word is getting around, the demand is great," says Olaf Bohn, head of the Hans Fitze House, the Evangelical Press Service (epd). At the moment the places are fully booked. During the day, the Haus der Diakonie offers a leisure meeting place and advice for people with addiction problems. Bohn: "It's nice that we now also have an offer in the evening and we didn't have to put people out in the cold."

The temperature inside the special igloo tents is 15 degrees warmer than outside thanks to the fireproof, resilient insulating material and an aluminum coating. The insulation properties of the igloo are excellent, and a mobile toilet was set up as a sanitary facility. "So far we have had good experiences," says Bohn in an initial assessment after four weeks. He hopes there will be no incidents. "If there's trouble at night, we have to dismantle the igloos immediately," says Bohn, who is already making plans for spring. If the igloo project goes well, he could imagine having tents in the garden to sleep in all year round.

The initiative "Help for Hamburg's homeless" wants to set up 30 winter-proof igloo tents in the city this winter. According to the initiative, many homeless people avoid the city's emergency shelters because they can't cope with the situation there or their dogs aren't allowed there. "We want to do something so that the homeless don't freeze to death in the freezing cold," says initiator Max Bryan, who is looking for more space on private land for the igloos.
