Increased number of crimes in Schleswig-Holstein

In Schleswig-Holstein, the number of criminal offenses increased by 25 percent last year. A total of 221,183 crimes were counted, as Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack (CDU) announced on Thursday when the police crime statistics for 2022 were presented.

The sharp increase is primarily due to a single major scam where people used an online dating site believing they were in touch with people they could actually meet, the minister said. If this fraud procedure is excluded, the number of criminal offenses increased by six percent, the clearance rate was 54.1 percent.

In the major fraud investigation, 33,738 cases of benefit fraud with a total damage of over 17.7 million euros were recorded by twelve suspects. Without knowing it, the victims only chatted with employees of the company and paid money for it.

In the areas of robbery, bodily harm and burglary, the number of cases increased significantly. Chief criminal director Rolfpeter Ott attributed this to the end of the corona restrictions. The number of robberies rose by 24 percent compared to the previous year and fell by 1.7 percent compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019. The number of physical injuries increased by 14.5 percent compared to 2021, compared to 2019 it fell by 2.7 percent. Burglaries increased by 19 percent year-on-year and decreased by 40 percent compared to 2019.

Sütterlin-Waack paid special attention to the depiction of child abuse on the Internet. The number of cases for the dissemination, acquisition, possession and production of depictions of child sexual abuse online fell by 80 cases (minus 7.7 percent) to 955 cases. However, the crime statistics only record the numbers of completed investigations by the police, emphasized the minister. The high number of cases that were received in this area of crime, especially in the second half of 2022, could not have been finally determined and recorded.

“In the area of sexual abuse and the subsequent dissemination of these horrible acts on the Internet, the first priority is to prevent ongoing acts of abuse. That has top priority,” explained Sütterlin-Waack, referring to the scarce human resources. She announced: "In the fight against depictions of sexual abuse on the Internet, we are strengthening our state police with 30 additional personnel." Furthermore, it is planned to relieve the employees of the evaluation of confiscated data carriers through the comprehensive use of image recognition software.

On the occasion of Brokstedt's knife attack, the minister also addressed knife attacks. Last year, 909 knife attacks were recorded in Schleswig-Holstein, 100 more than in the previous year. Of the total of 1,148 casualties, 14 were killed and 62 seriously injured. 239 victims were slightly injured. Of the 909 cases, 811 suspects were recorded, 63 percent of whom were German and 37 percent non-German.

A 17-year-old girl and her 19-year-old friend were killed in Brokstedt's knife attack on January 25 on a train from Kiel to Hamburg. A 33-year-old Palestinian was arrested as a suspect.
