In the middle of the tournament, the retired German captain settles accounts

The frustration over his non-nomination does not seem to have subsided yet. That's why Robin Benzing expressed emotional words about his departure from the German national basketball team. "To this day I can't really find the words for it. That was very, very hard. It was like a broken heart for me or a dagger going in the middle," said the 33-year-old ex-captain on Magentasport's GotNexxt podcast. The national team has been a kind of drug for him in recent years. "There was nothing more important to me." The new captain has been NBA professional Dennis Schröder for a few weeks.

Benzing was removed from the provisional squad for the European Championships by national coach Gordon Herbert in August. Herbert cited an injury that Benzing had suffered in the summer as one of the reasons for the cancellation. "At the beginning of June he informed me that he had a stubborn injury in the pelvis/groin area," explained the national coach, who found the decision very difficult. The injury "impaired" Benzing.

Benzing himself apparently felt ready for the tournament. “I said I would like to be there. If it is no longer enough in terms of sport, then also as the eleventh or twelfth man. It was clear that I would also accept this role," said Benzing. Emotionally affected, the veteran described what he had already given up everything because of the national team. "For me it was a matter of course that I missed the birth of my daughter for Germany. It was a matter of course for me to qualify for the World Cup, even though my wife had been diagnosed with cancer and had an operation.” Sentences that can also be interpreted as an accusation of ingratitude.

Benzing is still very popular in the German team. Schröder, his successor as captain, had declared before the start of the tournament that he was in contact with Benzing almost every day. His all-round blow seems unfortunate - with all due respect for his disappointment - at least with regard to the time. The German team started the European Championship with two wins and will play against Lithuania on Sunday (2.30 p.m., Magentasport).

Especially since Benzing had already expressed his incomprehension shortly after being ousted in August. “The national team was always something very special for me, and everyone knows that. I do think I deserved to be there. And I think they could have given me that too. But now others have to explain that,” said the captain who had been sorted out at the time.

The currently unattached winger, who last played for Fortitudo Bologna, is confident about the future at the club. “Everything is a bit closed right now, the Eurobasket is running. I have to see that I wait a bit. I don't think I'm in the worst position," said Benzing. “Who knows what will happen.” Benzing is currently keeping fit with the second division Gießen 46ers.
