In Madrid, the mothers of Torrecardenas (in Madrid) and La Paz (in Madrid) collaborate in complex pediatric surgery

The Torrecardenas Maternal and Child Hospital and La Paz Hospital (Madrid), have established a collaboration between Pediatric Surgery Vascular Malformations Group at the Madrid hospital and the leading pediatric surgeons in Almeria. Dr. Juan Carlos Lopez Gutierrez, the head of Hospital La Paz's Pediatric Surgery Service, and Dr. Luis Alonso Jimenez (head of the Pediatric Surgery Unit at Torrecardenas Maternal and Child University Hospital), have created an environment for collaboration in multidisciplinary pediatric surgery.

Manuel Vida, the Maternal and Child Hospital's managing director, stated that this collaboration was "without a doubt very important because it will allow minors with complicated surgeries to receive assistance in our center, so avoiding trips to another province."

Luis Alonso (head of the Torrecardenas Maternal and Child University Hospital's Pediatric Surgery Unit), explains that this collaboration resulted in the formation of a work group that has performed two activities. The first was at Hospital La Paz where Dr. Luis Alonso performed a thoracic operation with the Pediatric Surgery team. Then Dr. Juan Carlos Lopez performed a vascular malformations operation at the Torrecardenas Maternal and Child University Hospital, along with Dr. Cristina Dominguez (a pediatric surgeon at Almeria). He also participated in the review of some of these most complex cases.

Dr. Luis Alonso stated that this collaboration "allows the Pediatric Surgery Unit to perform more complex procedures, which results in an improvement in the care for children from Almeria, who can be treated for this disease in our province without the need to travel to other countries".
