Huawei and Deutsche Bahn – The risk is always with you

This week I learned that Deutsche Bahn continues to use products from the Chinese telecommunications group Huawei in its digital infrastructure - despite growing international and national security concerns.

Things that come to mind when I think of trains: Delays, cancellations, timetable and route changes, dirty and clogged toilets, broken doors, broken air conditioning, confusing tariffs – the list could go on and on. If there were fewer delays thanks to the use of Huawei, according to a friend, she would be okay with that. She said: "It doesn't matter if they try to make leverage out of Deutsche Bahn as part of the critical infrastructure. It won't hit us, it can't get any worse."

That might be a funny comment. But he does reveal why people use Huawei and similar companies despite security risks: Because they believe they have no other choice. Huawei can often offer its components at lower prices than the competition, making the company attractive to governments and organizations on a tight budget.

But Huawei is a Chinese company said to have close ties to the Beijing regime. It is feared that its technology could be used to gain access to sensitive information and critical infrastructure through backdoors. Because of Huawei's lack of transparency about the security of its technology, experts have found it difficult to assess the actual risk.

The 64 million euro contract for the construction of the internal network of Deutsche Bahn was awarded to the Telekom subsidiary Business Solutions. Routers and splitters from Huawei are used. There is a risk that malicious programs can be smuggled in with a software update.

We must ask ourselves whether we want to trade long-term security and independence for convenience and cheap services. If you really think about it, the answer is no. Deutsche Bahn should look for alternatives as soon as possible.
