Herrmann rejects further voluntary acceptance of asylum seekers

Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) has called on the federal government to refrain from voluntarily accepting further asylum seekers from Italy and other EU external border states. "Starting additional admission programs in times of already high access numbers is not only the wrong signal, but also reveals that the federal government has not recognized the seriousness of the situation," said Herrmann of the German Press Agency in Munich. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) should therefore not make any new admissions commitments without consulting the federal states. "In the end, this only leads to the municipalities being overburdened and our social systems being overwhelmed."

“While other EU member states are putting their asylum policy to the test, the federal government is going its own way without thinking and is closing its eyes to reality,” criticized Herrmann. "Under the cloak of apparent humanity, this is a policy on the backs of the states, municipalities and in particular the citizens." Herrmann is currently chairman of the state interior ministers' conference.

Most recently, the German district association had asked the federal government not to accept any more asylum seekers from Italy and other EU external border states. Herrmann called this demand “absolutely understandable in the current situation”. "Many countries have already reached their capacity limit and the accommodation options in the municipalities are heavily utilized."

Around two-thirds of the federal states are currently no longer accepting asylum seekers from the nationwide distribution system. Bavaria is currently one of the few countries that has not yet been deregistered from the system. "This is absolutely alarming. The federal government must finally take the calls for help from the federal states and local authorities seriously," said Herrmann.

In June, Germany had agreed to accept 3,500 asylum seekers. This is a contribution to a voluntary EU solidarity mechanism, initially planned for one year, to relieve southern border states such as Italy. The main focus is on people who have been rescued from distress at sea by private aid organizations. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the first transfers to Germany can be expected at the end of September.
