"He knows that's not normal," the witness calls into the room

Not only did the US tabloid press look forward to this appearance, the defense also apparently hoped for advantages: In Los Angeles, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the current wife of the California governor, testified in tears on the witness stand against ex-film mogul Harvey Weinstein. Siebel Newsom almost screamed as she told Los Angeles court how he raped her in a hotel room 17 years ago. "He knows that's not normal!" she called into the hall. "He knows full well there's no consent." Weinstein listened silently from the defense bench.

Siebel Newsom became the fourth woman to take the witness stand Monday (local time) against the fallen film producer. Observers spoke of the most dramatic and emotional statement so far in the process that has been going on for three weeks. Siebel burst into tears again and again, even when she was supposed to identify the 70-year-old accused for the record. "He's wearing a suit and a blue tie, and he's staring at me," she said, crying.

The 48-year-old wife of Gov. Gavin Newsom described how Weinstein first introduced her to her at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival. At the time, she was a small-scale producer and actress, while he was in Hollywood at the height of his power.

"It felt like the Red Sea was parting," Siebel Newsom said of a scene in a room where everyone would have given way to Weinstein. "I didn't know if it was awe or fear." Later, when they shared a drink, Weinstein was quite charming and "showed a real interest in talking about my work."

A few weeks later, he invited her to a meeting at a Beverly Hills hotel, Siebel Newsom said. She thought other people would be there, but then unexpectedly found herself alone in a suite with him. When Weinstein came out of the toilet wearing only a bathrobe and began groping and masturbating, she went into shock. "Horror! Horrible,” Newsom exclaimed. "I'm shivering. I'm like a stone, I'm cold as ice. This is my worst nightmare. I'm just an inflatable doll!" After that she felt "so much shame".

When prosecutors asked why she didn't just walk away, Siebel Newsom said, "You don't say no to Harvey Weinstein." And further, "He can make your career or it can ruin it." She is later asked why she did too continued to correspond via email with Weinstein after the alleged rape. She felt that what happened was a "one time thing" since Weinstein was now married. "I tried to put what happened in a box, although sometimes it came out," she said, according to a New York Post report.

Weinstein's attorneys said Siebel Newsom and Weinstein had consensual sex. She used the film producers, who were so influential at the time, to promote her career. Lawyers had only a brief opportunity to cross-examine Siebel Newsom on Tuesday. They wanted to continue the survey on Tuesday.

Weinstein has been charged with eleven counts in Los Angeles, including rape and other sexual assaults, affecting five women. He has pleaded not guilty - as he did in the New York trial at the end of which he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexually abusing a production assistant and aspiring actress in 2020.
