Hamburgers save 16 percent on natural gas

Private individuals and businesses (excluding industry) in Hamburg saved 16 percent natural gas and eight percent electricity in autumn and winter 2022 compared to the previous year, so there is a big difference in the forms of energy. An alliance of the city, chamber of commerce, chamber of crafts, companies, scientific and cultural institutions and associations came together last autumn to call for energy saving, as the Senate press office announced. In the coming weeks, the partners of "Hamburg Turns Das" want to present their savings across the city.

"The development of energy consumption in Hamburg shows that many individual measures can have a large overall effect," said Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher, thanking those involved. Even if spring is near, economical use of energy remains important, said Tschentscher, "for a secure energy supply and climate protection".

Since the start of the campaign, 36 partners have supported the goal of saving energy in all areas of life. In addition to concrete measures, the focus was on motivating our own employees and all Hamburg residents to get involved. The "Europa Passage", for example, reduced the Christmas lights during the Advent season and was thus able to save 7,500 kilowatt hours of electricity.

Due Hamburg Chamber of Commerce expressed its satisfaction with the result on Wednesday, but also warned: "Hamburg's economy made its contribution to energy savings at an early stage. In many cases, however, this was also associated with painful production declines for companies. Especially in times of crisis, we need an enabling culture in order to tackle the important future projects for Hamburg," said President Norbert Aust. “Hamburg turns it” showed what is possible “when politics, business and society pull together. We should continue to use this momentum together to make Hamburg the pioneer of an economically viable climate change.” According to Aust, in the second half of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year, 18 percent of electricity and 23 percent of heat were saved in the Chamber of Commerce building.
