Hamburg vaccination center in Rothenburgsort reopened

The Center for Vaccination Medicine has moved from its previous location in Hamburg-Hamm to the premises of the Institute for Hygiene and Environment (HU) in Rothenburgsort. The reopening was officially celebrated on Thursday with a tour. Social and Health Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer (SPD) presented the new premises at Marckmannstrasse 129b and the work of the Center for Vaccine Medicine.

Schlotzhauer, who has been in office since December 2022, recalled the traditional history of the institution: "The Hamburg Vaccination Center has been a state institution for over 150 years and has special expertise in the field of vaccination and travel medicine," says Schlotzhauer. And further: "It has always advised not only citizens but also medical experts and the Hamburg health authorities and authorities."

With the Center for Vaccination Medicine, the so-called Port and Airport Medical Service (HÄD) including the Crisis Response Center is now also moving to Rothenburgsort. Together, the two facilities form the "Hamburg Port Health Center" department of the HU. The physical proximity to the specialist colleagues facilitates interdisciplinary exchange and close cooperation with the other departments. This strengthens Hamburg's "One Health Approach", which is intended to ensure that questions on topics such as the environment or food and even infectious medicine are dealt with within one facility.

Background: The HU is the Hamburg state laboratory and, as a state company, is assigned to the authority for the environment, climate, energy and agriculture. Around 300 employees work in the three departments of the institute (food safety and zoonoses, hygiene and infectious medicine, environmental studies). With the move, all ten departments of the HU are now based at the same location. A Germany-wide pilot project for wastewater monitoring in Hamburg was recently confirmed, in which trends in the occurrence of infections can be observed on the basis of wastewater analyses. The results can serve as indicators for assessing the pandemic situation.

As a HU facility, the vaccination center is intended to support the Hamburg population with all questions relating to vaccinations, including travel medicine advice and the associated preventive measures. Recommended vaccinations for adults and children are also carried out on site. The vaccination center is also a state-approved yellow fever vaccination center.

Corona vaccinations can also be obtained in the newly opened vaccination center. The municipal vaccination centers provided especially for this purpose were closed at the end of 2022, and since then the first points of contact have been the resident doctors. Vaccination against Sars-Cov-2 is also possible in some hospitals after prior registration.
