Hamburg SPD demands the exclusion of the IZH

In view of the violent suppression of the protests in Iran, the Hamburg SPD is demanding that the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH) be expelled from the Council of Islamic Communities (Shura). "The SPD Hamburg shows solidarity with the people in Iran who are fighting for women's rights, the rule of law, freedom and life at the risk of their lives," says a paper by the Eimsbüttel district association (WELT reported), which was approved on Friday evening by a very large majority of one State Party Congress of the Social Democrats was accepted. "We are also contacting the Hamburg Shura and asking them to exclude the Hamburg Islamic Center from the Shura."

The reason given is that the IZH is one of the most important contact points for the persecution, spying and intimidation of opposition figures by Iran abroad. "An institution that is financed by an inhuman regime, ideologically managed and classified as extremist should not be part of the Islamic communities in Hamburg."

The IZH, which operates the Blue Mosque on the Alster, is regarded by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution as an outpost of Iran in Europe and has been observed for years. As a member of the shura, it is also part of the Islamic State Treaty that the city concluded with the Islamic communities ten years ago and which is due to be evaluated later this year.

In October, Green party leader Maryam Blumenthal called for consequences for the IZH because of the Iranian government's violent actions. At the state party conference of her party later in November, it should also be decided that the center should no longer play a role in the city's contracts with the Shura.

According to information from this newspaper, the Schura Islamic Association intends to submit this question to its 63 members for a vote in November. An arbitration commission is currently deliberating whether the membership of the IZH should be suspended for the time being.

The CDU, AfD and FDP in the Hamburg parliament have long been calling for the termination of the contract because of the involvement of the IZH. The result of the evaluation is to be presented to the citizenship later this year.
