Hamburg's baths are further cooled down and temporarily closed

The high energy prices are also becoming increasingly difficult for the providers of sports and leisure facilities - including Baederland, the operator of the municipal swimming pools. After the first savings measures were taken in late summer and the temperature of many water surfaces was lowered, things are now moving on. As announced on Thursday, from October 10th, the temperature in all pools will drop by 1 degree.

The operation of the warm outdoor pools is particularly complex in winter, and Baederland also reacts to this. The majority of the year-round outdoor pools and the outdoor pool of the Bondenwald indoor pool as well as the three slides in Bramfeld and Billstedt will be taken out of service. “These measures are exactly the right lever to make the energy saving contribution of 15 to 20 percent that we are all demanding. At the same time, they are justifiable to all stakeholders," says Dirk Schumaier, Managing Director of Baederland Hamburg. The steps would be based on the step-by-step plan of the Baederallianz Deutschland, a nationwide association of leading bathing associations and institutions. The proposed adjustments would be implemented by Baederland in the short term close competition, the popular Arriba in Norderstedt, the outdoor pools were already closed in mid-September.

"Our most important concern is to maintain swimming lessons, as many children did not have access to them during the Corona crisis," Schumaier continued. Health and leisure sports are also relevant areas. "Since the saunas make an important contribution to the health of society in the cool season, they will remain open until further notice - especially since only the sauna ovens in MidSommerland are heated with gas. All other saunas at Baederland Hamburg are operated with green electricity," says the Baederland boss. However, this does not necessarily mean that the measures have come to an end: "Should the crisis situation worsen in the next few weeks, further steps will be considered," it said. Corresponding restrictions would then primarily affect the fun areas of the pools.

But the energy prices are not the only problem for the pool operator, and the staffing situation continues to be tense. "Nevertheless, it is important to us to keep our locations open across the board during the cold season and the associated cold season. At the same time, we have a duty of care towards our employees,” says Schumaier. "We will therefore set up up to two days off a week in most of our pools in order to adapt our offer to the available personnel capacities." The closing days should be placed on days with low utilization - with the exception of public holidays and the weekend. The Bartholomäus-Therme and the Kaifu-Bad will remain open seven days a week until further notice. The morning, school and club swimming will take place unchanged in all pools. The courses offered are also not affected by the adjustments.

The exact opening hours should be available online at www.baederland.de in good time by October 10th.
