Supporters were given white T-shirts with Moise's picture and caps the day before the last ceremony to honor Moise. Moise was shot multiple times in July 7th during an attack on his private residence that severely injured Martine.

Pedro Guilloume, a Cap-Haitien resident, said that "This is something we will forever remember." He hoped to attend his funeral. "All Haitians should show solidarity.

The funeral is being held just days after Haiti's new prime minister was installed with the support of key diplomats. This move appeared to be aimed at avoiding a leadership battle following Moise’s assassination.

Ariel Henry was appointed prime minister by Moise just before he was slain, but Claude Joseph was never sworn in. Henry has pledged to form a provisional consensus government, until elections are held.

On Thursday, violent protests erupted in Cap-Haitien. Several men opened fire and blocked roads with blazing tires. Unknown officers and a convoy of police were heavily guarded as they drove through the flaming barricade. A vehicle almost flipped over.

On Thursday morning, a priest presided over a Mass at Cap-Haitian’s cathedral to honour Moise. He warned that there is too much violence in Haiti and asked for peace.

Martine Moise, her three children, and Henry offered their condolences at a small ceremony in Cap-Haitien on Thursday night.

The ceremony was presided over by a priest. He said that "they took his life, but can't take the memories." They can't take his mind. They won't accept his ideas. We are Jovenel Moise."

In February 2017, Moise was elected Haiti's president. He has been subject to increasing criticism from those who accuse him of being more authoritarian in recent years. After the country's failed legislative elections, Moise had been in power by decree for over a year.

According to authorities, at least 26 suspects were arrested in connection with the assassination. This includes 18 ex-military personnel from Colombia. Police continue to search for more suspects in the assassination plot. They include a former rebel leader, and an ex-senator.
