Habeck's heating promises are not feasible, says the FDP

The FDP has accused Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck of making untenable promises in the dispute over a ban on gas and oil heating systems when replacing heating systems.

"I don't think it's feasible to lower the price of heat pumps to the level of gas heating either," said parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr on Wednesday "Bild".

A conventional heating system costs about 7000 euros, a heat pump can quickly amount to 20,000 euros. There would also be costs for conversion measures, "I have no idea how this should be financed."

Habeck had promised households with lower and middle incomes that switching to a heat pump from 2024 would not be more expensive than a new gas heating system. He wants to cushion this socially with federal grants.

The background is the plan of the traffic light coalition to ban the installation of pure gas or oil heating systems from next year. Instead, new heating systems must be operated with at least 65 percent renewable energy. However, a corresponding draft law is controversial in the government. State secretaries from the economy, construction and finance ministries should seek a solution on Wednesday. So far, the plan is for the cabinet to agree on March 29th.

The Green politician announced on Tuesday that he would take the necessary funds from the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF). Dürr said that the necessary money could not come from the federal budget or from the KTF.

The FDP politician now asked Habeck not to rely unilaterally on the heat pump: "I don't think it makes sense to force a certain technology with a lot of tax money. It would be better if we relied on different technologies, such as hydrogen, which can be significantly cheaper to buy and operate.”
