German disappeared while hiking in Cape Town - Five suspects in court

It was supposed to be a walking excursion to a well-known attraction in Cape Town. But Nick F., 22, from Döbern (Brandenburg) never came back from the area around Table Mountain National Park.

The young German tourist has been missing since February 15 and not only his relatives are very worried. Because police investigations had recently turned up a lead that gave cause for concern.

A group of local criminals were in possession of items belonging to the young man, including his credit card. The five suspects had to appear in court (District Court of Wynberg, a suburb of Cape Town) on Monday. They are charged with robbery, said Eric Ntabazalia of the National Law Enforcement Agency.

The suspects were interrogated for the first time on Tuesday of last week. According to their own statements, the police have not yet been able to prove a direct connection between the suspects and the disappearance of the Brandenburger almost three weeks ago.

According to local media reports, one of the young men admitted to stabbing Nick F. in a first interrogation, but he did not give any further information. However, this statement was later retracted. As the English-language news portal news 24 reports, one of the defendants said when leaving the court: "We didn't do it" - we didn't do it.

But where is 22-year-old Nick F., who comes from near Cottbus? As the "Lausitzer Rundschau" published in Brandenburg reports, which is in contact with the family of the missing person, search teams and volunteers have already searched the area several times. The bad weather is the main obstacle at the moment.

A security camera photo circulated on social media on February 15 showing the young man in sportswear walking towards a hiking trail at the foot of the Carboniferous Mountain in Hout Bay, another suburb of Cape Town. The police confirmed that the German was dropped off there by a driving service.

A search ad on a Facebook page for Germans in Cape Town said Nick F. had registered for a surfing course on February 16 but did not show up. His clothes and valuables are still in his room in the guest house. The German embassy in South Africa said it had been informed of the case and was in contact with the South African authorities and relatives.
