From 3.44 to 17.70 euros - that's how much a pizza margherita costs in Europe's capitals

Who doesn't know this situation: You're on vacation and suddenly you're getting hungry. All good restaurants are fully booked and you don't feel like strolling through the streets any longer. You'll probably end up in a place that also sells pizza. Italian food is one of the most popular dishes around the world.

No wonder that Unesco has declared the oven-baked flatbread with tomato sauce and cheese as an intangible world cultural heritage. Pizza is also very popular in this country. According to data from the "Consumption and Media Analysis" from 2022, 25.3 percent of the more than 23,000 respondents in Germany eat pizza several times a month - and probably don't do without it on vacation either.

The online travel magazine "Travelbook" (which, like WELT, belongs to the Axel Springer Group) has therefore looked at the prices for the pizza classic Margherita (tomato with mozzarella cheese) in a total of 43 European capitals and created a "pizza index". created. There were even a few surprises in the best field.

But before we dive into the pizza cosmos and it could happen that you end up craving a piece, one more question for you:

If you want to save on your pizza, you shouldn't order it in Bern. For the Swiss Confederates, the Margherita is the most expensive in a European comparison at an average of 17.70 euros. On the other hand, vacationers in Bosnia-Herzegovina can make a real bargain at a pizza dinner. In the capital Sarajevo it is the cheapest at 3.44 euros.

With an average price of 9.11 euros, Berlin ranks in the middle of the pizza index in 23rd place. And how expensive is the Pizza Margherita in its country of origin? At around 9.33 euros fresh from the oven in Rome, it is neither particularly expensive nor particularly inexpensive. Italy ranks 22nd ahead of Germany.

Here is an overview of the entire ranking:

For the ranking, the travel magazine evaluated at least six menus from different restaurant categories per city. In total, more than 500 menus were considered. The price for a freshly baked Margherita pizza was determined. On average, the pizzas had a diameter of 30 centimetres. An average price was then determined for each of the 43 European capitals. The ranking goes from expensive to cheap.

The capitals of the 27 EU member states, the United Kingdom and the seven member states of the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) were considered. The capitals of the four countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the EU accession candidate Ukraine were also there. In addition to Ankara (Turkey), three metropolises from four non-EU countries that are in the European Customs Union were also taken into account.

The restaurants examined were all located in busy or central areas of the respective capital. The locations were selected at random. Therefore, the Pizza Index is not representative and cannot provide any real conclusions about the purchasing power in the respective countries. Due to the focus on capital cities, which are usually visited more frequently by tourists, the result is also not representative. This is why pizzas in Athens and Nicosia are comparatively expensive, although Greece and Cyprus have relatively low purchasing power compared to other European countries.

By the way, we tried it out for ourselves how to conjure up the perfect pizza at home:
