“Friedrichstrasse becomes a pedestrian zone” – Jarasch opposes Giffey

Berlin's Green Senator for the Environment and Mobility, Bettina Jarasch, wants to stick to the car-free Friedrichstrasse. “Friedrichstrasse will become a pedestrian zone. And Charlottenstraße, the parallel street, will become a bicycle street," said Jarasch in the RBB "Abendschau" on Tuesday. The decision of the administrative court, which was announced on Tuesday, will not change that at all. According to his assessment, the blocking of Friedrichstrasse for cars is illegal. In an urgent decision, the court agreed with the owner of a shop in Friedrichstrasse, who had sued.

The senator contradicted the governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD), whose deputy in the red-green-red Senate she is. After the decision of the administrative court on Tuesday afternoon, Giffey had called for speedy implementation.

"I would put it this way: I'm not sure whether Franziska Giffey understood exactly what this judgment was about," said Jarasch. "It's all about the time elapsed between the end of the traffic attempt and the final partial confiscation, that's what the blocking for car traffic is called," said the Green politician.

The previous traffic senator had announced the traffic test for six months. It began in August 2020. Despite considerable criticism, Friedrichstrasse is still closed on the section between Französischer Strasse and Leipziger Strasse.

The court said it was a bit too much time, said Jarasch about the decision. "But the partial confiscation, that is, the conversion into a promenade, into a pedestrian zone, doesn't change anything."

Some time ago, Jarasch had applied to the Mitte district office to fundamentally change the status of the disputed stretch of road as a public road. The section would then no longer be a public road, but an area without car traffic, i.e. a pedestrian zone. This would also make the current lawsuit obsolete and result in a completely new legal situation. But the process is still ongoing.

When asked whether this was already an election campaign, the senator said: "So I am responsible for the traffic turnaround in this Senate." In addition, there was an agreement in the coalition negotiations as to what should become of Friedrichstrasse. “And this process continues. It's all about getting there. And Ms. Giffey knows that too.”
