Florida stripped Disney World of self-government rights

The Walt Disney World theme park complex has lost control of a self-governing borough in Florida. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation on Monday that would permanently transfer oversight powers over the Reedy Creek Improvement District to the US state.

"Today the corporate kingdom comes to an end," DeSantis declared at a ceremony. "There's a new sheriff in town, and accountability will be the order of the day."

The move is seen as a tit-for-tat for Disney's opposition to a law signed by DeSantis last year that bans teaching about sexual orientation or gender identity from kindergarten through third grade in Florida. Critics say the law marginalizes members of the LGBTQ community. It was therefore given the name "Don't Say Gay" by activists.

Shortly after Disney's public stance against the law, DeSantis directed members of the Republican-dominated Florida state legislature to hold a special session to initiate the process of removing the county's self-government.

The governor and other Republicans accused Disney of injecting inappropriate content into children's entertainment as a promoter of a "woken" ideology. In the American discourse, "wokeness" means a greater awareness of the connections between social and historical grievances and racism and discrimination against minorities.

The new law will change the name of the previously self-governing district to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. DeSantis also appointed a new five-member Board of Directors. Its members were previously determined by entities controlled by Disney.

Democrats have chastised the law as purely an act of retaliation, amounting to a power grab by the governor. With his policies, DeSantis has placed Florida at the center of nationwide culture wars about gender identity, ethnicity and education and is considered a possible presidential candidate in 2024.

Former US President Donald Trump wants to run again as the Republican presidential candidate in the 2024 election. However, Trump still has to assert himself against a possible competitor from Florida: Governor Ron DeSantis.
