Every fifth Ukrainian refugee has already found work in Germany

According to their own statements, one in five refugees from Ukraine has now found a job in Germany. This emerges from a survey by the Ifo Institute of 1,461 Ukrainians published on Wednesday. However, more than half work below their formal qualifications. "The willingness to work among Ukrainian refugees is very high," said Ifo researcher Tetyana Panchenko. "Very few are not interested in getting a job."

The majority of respondents want to stay in Germany for the next two years. The proportion has even increased compared to a first survey among Ukrainian refugees in June. A good third of those surveyed plan to return to Ukraine. In the survey in June, it was just under half.

According to the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), people from Ukraine who are in Germany with “temporary protection” status can usually start work immediately. A recognition procedure is only necessary in so-called regulated professions – for example in the health sector.

Since the beginning of the war, millions of people have fled their country - it is the largest refugee movement in Europe since the Second World War. Almost a million Ukrainians now live in Germany.
