Emergency calls will soon also be possible via app

In the future, it should also be possible to make emergency calls in Hamburg via an app. This was announced by the interior authority on Wednesday after the laying of the foundation stone for a new rescue control center for the fire brigade in the Hamm district. Once the control center has been commissioned, emergency calls should no longer only be possible by telephone, but also via mobile phone apps and messenger services. The new technology should allow photos and videos as well as the location of those seeking help to be transmitted.

"With the construction of this state-of-the-art control center, we are setting the course for the future viability of the fire department in a growing metropolis," said the chief of the Hamburg fire department, Christian Schwarz. In this way, one would also do justice to the changed communication behavior of people.

"Every emergency vehicle that is on the road with blue lights in Hamburg is controlled from here," said a press release. A second new control center for the police is to be built in the Alsterdorf district. "The operations control centers of the police and fire brigade are the heart of operation control, this is where it is decided how quickly and in a targeted manner people in our city can be helped," said Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD). With the renewal of the two control centers and "an unprecedented investment volume", Hamburg's security infrastructure will be "raised to a completely new level".

The municipal Sprinkenhof GmbH is taking on the new construction of the five-story building with a clinker facade designed by SUPERGELB architects in an industrial area in Hamm. The building on the 11,500 square meter site will house not only the operational operations department but also the operational and tactical staff of the fire brigade. Construction will probably be completed in 2025 and will cost around 100 million euros.

According to the Hamburg fire brigade, the alarm was raised more than 280,000 times last year. The rescue service managed around 250,000 of these calls. These include accidents, medical emergencies and help with storm damage.
