Election victory for the SPD, heavy losses for the CDU - Greens and AfD grow strongly

The old prime minister will probably also be the new prime minister: according to initial forecasts, the SPD won the election in Lower Saxony. Compared to the 2017 election (36.9 percent at the time), Prime Minister Stephan Weil's Social Democrats suffered losses, but with one result they clearly remained the strongest force. According to the ARD forecast at 6 p.m., it comes to 33.5 percent (minus 3.4). In contrast, the CDU, led by top candidate Bernd Althusmann, clearly missed its election goal of replacing the SPD with 27.5 percent (minus 6.1 percent) and fell short of its 2017 result of 33.6 percent.

The Greens and the AfD, on the other hand, were able to improve significantly, with both parties achieving double-digit results. According to the ARD forecast, the Greens come to 14.0 percent (5.3), the AfD to 11.5 (5.3). In 2017, the Greens came to 8.7 percent, the AfD to 6.2 percent. The FDP experienced a black evening, which according to the forecasts (5 percent in the ARD forecast) had to worry about entering parliament. In 2017, the Free Democrats entered parliament with 7.5 percent. It was also a used evening for the left: if they just missed out last time with 4.6 percent, they were clearly out this time with 2.5 percent.

The majority situation also depended on the entry of the FDP, and according to the forecasts, it could be enough for a red-green coalition. The SPD and CDU are currently governing in a grand coalition with Weil at the helm. The SPD politician is aiming for a third term, but hopes for a new edition of red-green. Weil had already led such an alliance from 2013 to 2017. CDU top candidate Althusmann, currently Economics Minister, does not rule out another grand coalition.
