Deng Xiaoping is one of China's most glorified leaders. After the horrors of the Cultural Revolution, it was the almost 1.60 tall man who, after Mao's death in 1976, closed the darkest chapter in Chinese history and led the country into a new era: that of opening up and turning to the world. Deng's slogans also determined Chinese foreign policy. "Hide your weaknesses," "buy yourself time," and "don't claim leadership" were the buzzwords that shaped China's appearance in the world from the 1980s onwards.
