Shortly before the nationwide nine-euro ticket expired, Deutsche Bahn was satisfied with the model project. "The experiment has been a complete success," said regional transport manager Evelyn Palla on Sunday. It is particularly pleasing that in the past three months there have been an average of around ten percent more passengers on regional transport than before the corona crisis.
According to the company, Deutsche Bahn alone sold around 26 million nine-euro tickets. "One in five users has even rediscovered public transport for themselves," said the group.
How many tickets were sold nationwide initially remained open. The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) intends to publish current figures this Monday. At the beginning of August, the association announced that a total of around 38 million 9-euro tickets had been sold in the first two months of validity, June and July. In addition, there are around ten million subscribers who do not have to buy their own 9-euro ticket.
The ticket, with which all regional and local transport could be used nationwide for nine euros per month, was launched in June. It expires at the end of the month. There is a political struggle about the possibility of a continuation in a suitable form.
The Berlin SPD can imagine offering the 9-euro ticket in the capital beyond August. Prime Minister Franziska Giffey's SPD proposes introducing such a regulation by the end of the year.
