Defense files bias against historians in Stutthof trial

In the trial against a former secretary in the Stutthof concentration camp, the defense attorney filed a motion for bias against the historical expert Stefan Hördler. Lawyer Wolf Molkentin justified the application before the Itzehoe district court on Monday, among other things, by saying that Hördler had worked in a double function as an expert and investigator.

In addition, he raised expectations of the public prosecutor's office regarding the result of his report, which then proved to be untenable. The public prosecutor's office and co-plaintiffs dismissed the application as unfounded. The presiding judge of the criminal chamber, Dominik Groß, announced a decision on the bias application at a later date.

The accused Irmgard F. is said to have worked as a civilian employee in the headquarters of the concentration camp near Danzig from June 1943 to April 1945. The public prosecutor's office accuses the 97-year-old of having aided and abetted the systematic murder of more than 11,000 prisoners through her paperwork. The defendant has not yet commented on the allegation in the process that has been going on for more than a year.

The Trial Chamber dismissed two other applications on Monday. It was about Hördler's role in an inspection of the former concentration camp. The historian accompanied two judges on a visit to the Polish memorial in early November. The defense questioned the impartiality of the expert, the co-plaintiffs want to dispel the concerns by summoning the witness again.
