Clever adventure with humor - this game will not disappoint Marvel fans

Take a couple of unused superheroes, put them in a flat share with the best of the Marvel Universe and the result is one of the most exciting turn-based tactics games of the year.

The development studio Firaxis, known for the genre favorite "XCOM", has mixed well-tried wit with a card game and a pinch of social simulation in the style of the Japanese role-playing classic "Persona 5" for "Marvel's Midnight Suns".

And that's what it's all about: There's stress in the Marvel Universe again. Demon Lilith wants to subjugate the world with the help of the criminal organization Hydra and reduces New York to rubble. Only a small group of heroines called "Midnight Suns" dares to fight evil from their shared apartment in a remote abbey.

But despite Captain Marvel, Iron Man or friendly neighbor Spider-Man rushing to the rescue, things are looking bad for the team. The only hope is the resurrection of a legendary hero named Hunter. No wonder, since he is the living offspring of the evil Lilith.

Players choose to take on the demons as a male or female hunter. To do this, they travel from city to city and face the enemies in round battles. In the story and side missions, helicopters must be sabotaged or information captured.

In boss battles, the team faces particularly tough opponents from the Marvel Universe, such as Sabretooth or Venom. At first it's all about defeating your opponents. Later the tasks become more complex. Players are then pressed for time to stop summons or fight on different fronts.

Before a mission you choose a team of three. As in a chess game, the pieces have certain abilities. Captain Marvel battles enemies with a photon beam, new superhero Nico uses blood magic to deal with enemies, and Hunter spins through enemy lines with a blizzard of blades.

Containers and crates on the battlefield may also be used as weapons. All of this uses up action points. Therefore, the fans have to plan their attacks well so as not to end up helpless on the battlefield. Thanks to the experience points gained, the heroes level up and become stronger.

The highlight of this superhero party: Each ability is symbolized by a playing card. In the style of well-known trading card games such as "Magic" or "Yu-Gi-Oh!", combinations with other cards create particularly effective attacks or defenses. Each hero or heroine only has a handful of cards at the beginning, but their number grows enormously as the game progresses.

By half-time at the latest, heads will be spinning, because improvements in the details of the deck selection are decisive for victory. It's not as complex as the originals, but the reward is spectacular and colorful fights that make you forget the lack of detail in the visual implementation.

As befits such a mix of role-playing and tactical games, the cards can be improved in a so-called demon forge. If you want, you can create your own maps from blueprints. For this, the players need raw materials, which they win in battle.

The base in a remote abbey also serves as a training ground and hospital. If team members are injured in battle, they are either out of action for a day or only start the battle weakened until they are healed. This also requires skillful management of the team from players.

Aside from fighting and operational planning, the fans also have to take care of the interpersonal aspects. Because cooped up in their abbey, the flat share develops a wide variety of problems.

Iron Man is a braggart who doesn't want to be told anything. Rebellious Magik deals with childhood trauma, and vampire hunter Blade is unable to declare his love for Captain Marvel.

Through conversation or just hanging out by the pool, Hunter controls liking. New friendships bring attack and defense bonuses in battle. As a small plus, many situations are peppered with insider gags from the Marvel Comics universe.

Conclusion: This mix of turn-based tactics, card game and social simulation makes “Midnight Suns” an exciting and extensive adventure that will entertain Marvel fans for hours. It doesn't matter whether the team is taking on stubborn opponents or just hanging out in the book club or in front of the TV. There is always something to do.

Experimenting with the different decks of cards in particular awakens the instinct to collect and makes for challenging battles. And the playfulness more than compensates for the meager technical implementation.

Marvel's Midnight Suns by Firaxis published by 2K Games. Playable on Windows, Playstation 4/5, Xbox One/Series and Nintendo Switch. It costs around 70 euros. USK from 12.
