Churriana de la Vega rehabilitates its historic artistic heritage

Hispano-Muslim art left Churriana de la Vega an important architectural legacy that we are privileged to have. The wealth of the Vega enabled a stage of exceptional splendor thanks to the good communication with Granada. This is reflected in Churriana's leading role as a place for negotiation of Capitulations between representatives of the Catholic Monarchs, and Boabdil.

Just a few steps from the Arabuleila irrigation canal, you will find the Arab Baths of Churriana. This medieval building dates back to the 13th-15th century and is the best-preserved hammam found in a rural setting in the province of Granada. The City Council has always hoped that they would be rehabilitated and made available to the residents. "They were declared in 2006 by the Junta de Andalucia Bien de Interes Cultural, (BIC), and we have the commitment for financing the project for their opening charged to 1% culture", says Mayor Antonio Narvaez. He also highlights the more than 200,000 euro investment made by the consistory for its maintenance and the completion of archaeological studies to support the project's drafting.

Because of its antiquity and typology, the building holds a significant historical-artistic heritage. It is urgently needed to repair the bathrooms, particularly the roof, and recover their architectural value.

All elements of an Arab bath are preserved in the Churriana de la Vega hammams: warm, cold, and hot rooms, all vaulted. Antonio Narvaez says that they form an inseparable pair with the Arabuleila irrigation canal, which was documented in 1219. This can be seen in the Archive of the Royal Chancery of Granada. The mayor says that the interpretation of this cultural element is distorted because additional elements were added to the original bathrooms. The City Council wants to accelerate the process of rehabilitation and transform the bathrooms into an open area as a tourist attraction and cultural attraction within the Vega. Many initiatives are offered throughout the year by the Arab Baths, including guided tours and historical reenactments in an exceptional setting.

CHURCH

The Parish Church was the first parish in the Kingdom. It was built in an old mosque (which researchers believe was an old mosque) located 200m from the site where the Arab baths were. The City Council recently completed a complete renovation of the facade in order to preserve and restore the historic heritage of Churriana. This beautiful tribute to the year 1500 was the year that the Church of the Visitation was constructed.

After the recent work, the project's original appearance was restored. The facade was plastered to modify it. The new stamp allows us today to see the image of traditional Mudejar construction techniques, where brick and rammed Earth caissons are the main protagonists. The 95% investment by the City Council has increased to 85,000 Euros to enable successively the removal of dampness and rehabilitation of the original façade.

The parish has borne the remaining 5%. The parish will continue to carry out the work this year to adapt and improve our assets, with an additional 25,000 euro. Antonio Narvaez concludes, "If there is one thing I am proud about as mayor, it's the immense wealth of our historic and artistic heritage, highly appreciated by our neighbors and which we are now trying to rehabilitate."
