Child suffocated in a daycare bed – the start of the process against educators

One and a half years after the death of a two-year-old boy in a daycare center in Gelsenkirchen, two educators from the facility have to answer to a court. The Gelsenkirchen district court accepted the charge of negligent homicide at the main hearing, a court spokesman said on Monday.

The women, who were 24 and 36 at the time of the crime, are accused of having disregarded their duty of care. The boy had suffocated in his bed during his nap because he had accidentally become trapped in a bunk bed.

The boy lay down in the bunk bed during his afternoon nap and obviously pushed up the floor panel of the bed above, which was not firmly anchored, the court spokesman said on the basis of the indictment. When the chipboard slid down again, his head was caught and he suffocated

The educators knew that the two-year-old was supposed to sleep in the daycare center for the first time and was not used to it. They still wouldn't have kept a sit watch or at least set up a baby monitor. The bedroom door was closed.

Two experts and several witnesses, including the boy's mother, are invited to the trial. Several media had already reported on the upcoming trial.
