CDU wants to make Hamburg “the safest city in Germany”.

After a series of electoral failures, the Hamburg CDU is entering the coming election years with a new policy statement. A state committee unanimously approved the new program in which the CDU emphasizes its conservative, liberal and Christian-social roots on Tuesday evening. He is certain that the program is the starting signal "for a very successful time for the CDU up to the important election year of 2025," said state chairman Christoph Ploß. The next general election will take place in Hamburg in 2025, with the district assembly elections a year earlier.

With the new basic program, the CDU wants to reposition itself in terms of content. Work had been done on a broad basis since January. "We wanted to work this out from the bottom up," said Ploß. "Every member had the chance to get involved in this basic program."

Main topics are economy, security, transport and education. "We are expressly committed to Hamburg as an industrial location and to our port as a defining part of the cityscape and a key factor for the business location," says the program. Energy and climate policy should not stand in contrast to the economy. Immigration must be limited and integration improved.

In addition, Hamburg should be made "the safest city in Germany", according to the basic program. In urban planning, further surface sealing must be avoided and areas with single-family houses with gardens must be preserved in their character. The CDU also wants to campaign for “traffic peace between all road users on the streets of Hamburg”.

The meeting of the state committee on the Steilshoop campus had begun with attacks on the red-green Senate and the traffic light coalition in Berlin. Ploß sharply attacked the federal government because of the planned citizens' allowance. Achievement must be worthwhile. "And the hard-working taxpayers in Germany, in particular, expect tax money to be used well," he says. With the CDU, the citizen money is therefore not to make.

In an interview with WELT AM SONNTAG a few days earlier, Ploß had also called for tougher action against radical climate activists, who, for example, repeatedly stuck to streets to block traffic. "Such a long detention without prior conviction is a strong encroachment on civil liberties and should therefore only be imposed very cautiously and only by order of a judge," said Ploß. "But yes, if, for example, the same people keep blocking roads and thus putting people in danger, we should give the police and judiciary such an instrument." to prevent.

Ploß sharply criticized the recent activities of the “Last Generation” group: “We are currently experiencing that human lives are being deliberately put at risk, for example by blocking roads so that ambulances cannot pass. At the same time, there is a great deal of understanding for this radicalization among the Greens, parts of the SPD and especially the Left Party. That strengthens these radical forces even further,” said the 37-year-old, who is also a member of the German Bundestag.

Citizenship faction leader Dennis Thering accused the Senate on Tuesday evening of being unimaginative and divided. More and more people in Hamburg are dissatisfied with the red-green government. "The Senate has long since passed its zenith and the sun has never risen at the traffic lights in Berlin," said Thering.

In the citizenship, the CDU with its 15 MPs has so far been ridiculed by the governing parties, which have a two-thirds majority. "You can dress warmly," Thering said to the SPD and Greens. "We have the clear aim to do better again in the 2025 election and to assume government responsibility."

The CDU only got 11.2 percent of the votes in the 2020 general election. In the federal elections last year, the Christian Democrats in Hamburg had achieved a historically poor result with 15.5 percent.
